Best-before dates are about quality, they are completely different to Use by Dates.

The best before date, sometimes shown as BBE or BBF is about quality, not safety. After the best-before date listed on a product, the food will be safe but may not be at its best. Best-before dates appear on a wide range of foods including:

frozen foods (such as peas, chips and ice cream)
dried foods (such as pasta and rice)
tinned foods (such as baked beans and canned tomatoes)
cheese
This also includes Pouched Food like the MRE product, as a result of specialist manufacturing and packaging, they have much longer BBF dates than most foods ( Our Freeze Dried Meals are another example of food with very long BBF dates )

The best-before date will only be accurate if the food is stored according to the instructions.
